The story of Jarden and how the firm was founded.
We are New Zealand's leading investment and advisory group and have been behind exceptional people and ideas for more than 60 years. Our story began when Ron Jarden started his business above a menswear shop in Wellington. An ex-All Black, Ron bought his commitment on the field to delivering the best possible outcomes for his clients. This remains a pillar of our work today.
Learn more about our history
1951
Ron Jarden was an average Kiwi who refused to be average. Ron wore the black jersey for the first time in 1951 and during a tour of Australia he was branded a genius when he scored 88 points over six matches. Ron retired at just 26 to start a business. That business was Jarden. 60 years later, Ron’s values still guide everything we do.
1961
In 1961, Ron Jarden opened his first office – in the fitting room of a menswear store. By age 31, he was the youngest member of the Wellington Stock Exchange and was building the company that would one day help develop New Zealand’s capital markets.
1966
Bryan Johnson joined Ron in 1966. With technical smarts and logical thinking, charisma and entrepreneurial spirit they helped to make the business become a significant player in the capital markets.
1977
Ron’s life was tragically cut short in 1977 when he passed away. Bryan Johnson and the other partners carried on Ron’s vision, continuing to lead the firm’s growth and performance and building the Jarden brand into something that has endured over time.
1980
Jarden had built a strong position with the leading corporates in New Zealand. From the sale of state-owned enterprises to the first Treaty settlements, Jarden played a major part in the big economic stories of the decade.
1990 - 2000s
Jarden had a crucial role in some of the major business deals of the 90s and 2000s, working with New Zealand’s growing companies. We also expanded our offerings to reflect those of a full service financial institution, covering investment banking, capital solutions and wealth.
From 2017
In the last ten years, our firm has continued to grow. We became joint owner of property finance provider Pearlfisher Capital, and also hold a majority stake in investment fund manager, Harbour Asset Management. In 2018, we acquired Direct Broking, helping thousands of Kiwis invest for themselves. We also purchased brokerage firm OMF. In 2020, we expanded into the Australian market and received carbonzero certification from Toitū Envirocare.
